IMAN #75 Self-Help Is No Help At All

Incredible Men,

Look who's on time this week.

Last week we talked about how Jesus already finished the work — how rest starts the moment you stop trying to earn what's already been given. If you missed it, go back and read it. This week I want to push on a related nerve, because I think it's the real reason so many of us can't stay rested even when we know better.

We live in a self-help culture. Five steps to fix your marriage. Ten habits of highly effective men. Wake up at 4:45, cold plunge, journal, grind. And look — some of that is fine as far as it goes. Discipline isn't the enemy. But somewhere along the way we started treating self-help like the whole gospel. Fix yourself. Optimize yourself. Save yourself. And Jesus looked at that whole approach and said the quiet part out loud, in words about as blunt as anything he ever said:

"Self-help is no help at all. Self-sacrifice is the way, my way, to finding yourself, your true self."

— Matthew 16:25 (MSG)

Read that twice. Self-help is no help at all. Not from Oprah, not from a life coach, not from your pastor — from Jesus. He's not anti-effort. He's anti-self-reliance. There's a massive difference between working hard and trying to be your own savior, and most of us have been quietly doing the second one while calling it the first.

This is where Jesus is completely counter-culture. Every voice in your feed is telling you to grind harder, hustle smarter, perform better. Jesus never once told a tired man to try harder. He told tired men to come to him. He's the one who "makes me lie down in green pastures" and "leads me beside still waters" — not because I collapsed there on my own, but because a Shepherd led me there (Psalm 23:2). A sheep doesn't self-help its way into a green pasture. It gets led. That's the picture. You are not the shepherd of your own life. You were never meant to be.

So if self-help isn't the goal, what is? Here's where it gets good. One day the crowds asked Jesus straight up:

"What must we do, to be doing the works of God?" Jesus answered, "This is the work of God, that you believe in him whom he has sent."

— John 6:28-29

Read that again. They asked for a task list. He gave them a Person to trust. The "work of God" was never a checklist you complete — it's belief. Surrender. Obedience. That's it. That's the whole assignment.

Here's the shift I want you to make this week: stop asking God to bless your grinding, and start asking Him to work through your surrender. Self-help says, "Try harder and you'll get there." Jesus says, "Stop trying to be your own help, lose that grip, and let me work through you." Those are not the same gospel. One exhausts you. The other replenishes you.

An incredible man isn't the one who's mastered every system. He's the one who's finally stopped performing for a God who was never grading him on effort — and started walking in obedience to a God who does the heavy lifting through him.

So — what's one thing you're still white-knuckling that you were actually supposed to hand over?

Lie down in the pasture. Let Him lead.

With you in the fight,

Pastor D

You're receiving this email because you matter to God — and you matter to me. Whether we've met or not, I'm for you, I believe in you, and I'm praying that you step fully into who God created you to be. I consider you an Incredible Man — not because you're perfect, but because you're called. Called to live with conviction, lead with integrity, and stand firm when life gets hard. The word incredible comes from the Latin incredibilis, meaning "not believable." It describes a man who lives differently — set apart, grounded, and unwavering.

I'm grateful you're here.
